The Fort Pierce Friday Fest

Fort Pierce is an appealing town on the Treasure Coast that has a number of attractions that make it well worth visiting. For starters, Fort Pierce offers excellent local restaurants and lodging choices, as well as a very nice recreation area on the north side of Fort Pierce Inlet where you can swim, fish, picnic, and otherwise just relax. There is also a UDT Navy Seal Museum (possibly the only museum devoted entirely to the trained aquatic mammals of the armed forces), a botanical garden, and a wildlife preserve. The attractions of Orlando (including Disney World) are within a two-hour drive of Fort Pierce, so there is plenty to do. My favorite attraction in this area, however, is right inside Fort Pierce - these are the attractions done and sponsored by the Main Street Fort Pierce Project.

Main Street Fort Pierce is devoted to historical preservation and creating new economic development in Fort Pierce. In addition to acquiring historic buildings (for instance, the Sunrise Theater, a venue dating back to 1923 that they renovated and turned into a performing arts center - they now feature weekly shows), they sponsor a wide variety of enjoyable programs. One of my favorites is Friday Fest. Friday Fest is the most popular street festival on the Treasure Coast. It is held the first Friday of every month and features live entertainment, food, and drink. Each month, over 5,000 people show up for the festival, and more are coming all the time.

The Fort Pierce Friday Fest would be an ideal opportunity to head to Fort Pierce in a Millenium Limo for some much needed fun. You wouldn't have to worry about navigating unfamiliar territory, you could imbibe as much as you want, taking in the sites and sounds of Fort Pierce, and then you could be driven back home - all in the comfort and luxury of a Millenium Limousine. It would be at once relaxing and exhilarating, as well as the perfect way to get out to a part of Florida that you many never make it to. Try out Fort Pierce, there's really something there for everyone.

Vacation Scams - How to Spot Them

Again, your mother was right. Actually, she was right twice. One, nothing in life is free and two, if sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

One of the biggest and longest running scams to date is the Vacation Fraud, where you or a loved one is told that they have won a free vacation package or a glamorous cruise getaway. If not totally "free", these "agents" say that they can get you that dream tour for a rock-bottom price. At this point, you, like many other law-abiding citizens start thinking "what could possibly go wrong?" A lot, apparently.

Let's just start with the obvious: you will not get a free vacation. Granted, there are rare packages out there from reputable travel agencies that may be free, but err on the side of caution. The most common travel and vacation scams include the following:

The Dubious Travel Agency Scam - You are called and told you are getting a free vacation package but you must pay "fees" to reserve this opportunity. Then after you pay these fees, the "travel agency" can no longer be found. Their phone line has been disconnected and there is no way you can get your money back. Another variation of this scam is telling you that you've been booked on a luxurious vacation trip verycheaply, but this is only for a "limited time". You are then asked to pay a "reservation fee" immediately (and this is usually a big amount) to assure your slot. It's only after payment that the "travel agent" tells you that your vacation dates are not available or, after some time, will tell you that the offer has already "expired". Then the "Agent" also disappears, along with your money.

Plane Tickets for Free- Here, they call you and say you have won two plane tickets to great spots like the Bahamas. What they're not saying is that you must book your hotel and buy your meals from the company that's giving away the tickets. If you stop and do the math before you accept this "free ticket" offer, you can easily calculate that the amount for food and accommodation easily covers the cost of a plane fare because prices have been so inflated.

The "Free Vacation" - You fly all the way to Hawaii or Mexico, ready to start your vacation, but you find out that you are booked in a small and dirty hostel with bad food. If you check out, they tell you that you void your return ticket. So, you can either stay in your bad hotel or pay a horribly inflated fee to get out of it so you can sleep in a decent hotel.

The Time Share Scam - You are given a free vacation, but before you enjoy it, you have to sit through a presentation from a timeshare salesman. Sometimes, you're not even told about the obligatory timeshare lecture before you reach your destination. Oftentimes, to get food tickets and accommodation, people have been forced to sit in through long lectures and end up being forced to sign contracts that are also fraudulent. In some cases, when the vacationers try to get away, they have been subjected to bullying and other unscrupulous tactics from these sales agents.

"Become a Travel Agent" Scam - Someone tells you that you're better off to be a travel agent because it saves you a lot of money in the long run. As a travel agent, they say, you get a lot of discounts and freebies while you're on holiday. The catch is, you have to pay them a "fee" to become an instant travel agent and when you become one, you realize you can't avail yourself of the discounts because your credentials are not recognized by any travel authority.

Fraudulent Vacation Discount Cards - You pay for a vacation card thinking it will make your vacation a little cheaper, but then you realize that the card has so many restrictions that you can't get the discounts you're entitled to. OR if you do get a discount, it's just taken off a "special price" and still comes down to the same price as everyone else is paying.

Protect yourself from these travel scams by following your gut instinct and being sceptical. Don't be afraid to say no and assert yourself when these "agents" become pushy. Never give your credit card number over the phone in the name of "reserving" your slot. If they give you a time limit, say you need to think about it; being hurried is usually a sign of a scam. Before accepting the package, go the distance - check the hotel, the airline, etc. - and make sure they are working with this promotion at the prices the agent says they are. Buy tickets and packages only from genuine agencies and in person, if possible and remember, offers from phone calls or spam email are more likely to be scams.

Ancient Greece

The Greek civilization is considered by historians as the first one in the history of mankind. A study of their archeological remains confirms that the ancient Greeks were a highly developed community. Their lifestyle and inventions indicate a high sense of order and aesthetics.

The ancient Greeks built houses along the shores of the land. They were dependent on the Aegean seas for their food supplies and other trade. Traveling brought them in contact with other cultures. They gained exposure to various agricultural methods and different types of metal work.

Different communities arose from the ancient Greece civilization. Some of them were the Aegean, Achaeans and the Pelasgians. Crete was the center of the Aegean civilization and was the dominant community in 2500 BC. The Achaeans made Mycenae their capital. A volcano caused the destruction of the Aegean community around 1400bc. The Mycenaeans absorbed the culture of the Aegean community.

In course of time, Greek settlements were transformed into city-states or poleis and each city-state was ruled by a king. The government was usually unstable due to the tyranny of the aristocrats. Democracy was hardly ever practiced.

The ancient Greeks were very keen on sports. The great athletic contest called the Olympic games began in 776 BC, which marked the beginning of the rise of the Greek civilization. At that point of time, Greek ideas were greatly influenced by many different foreign cultures. Artists were focusing on recreating human figures of mythology. The civilization saw its zenith around 500 BC. Excellence was seen in the fields of philosophy, art and literature. Wars with other civilizations began in 490 BC and the superior Greek armies overran their opponents to establish their supremacy. The ancient age of Greek civilization saw the birth of great philosophers like Pluto, Socrates, and the great emperor, Alexander.

The ancient Greeks were pagan. They prayed to the various elements of nature. They believed that favorable climate and good crops occurred when the gods were pleased. When things turned bad, they attributed it to the wrath of the gods. They performed sacrifices to appease the enraged gods.

Ancient Greeks were essentially simple-minded folks who left behind a beautiful legacy of art, philosophy and literature.

How Much Does Carpet Cleaning Cost?

If you have never had your carpet cleaned before, you might be a little in the dark as to what to expect. The fact that just about every carpet cleaning company has their own way of calculating cleaning prices doesn't help either. Prices for carpet cleaning vary greatly depending on the method, the level of service and your location. There are however two basic ways of figuring a cleaning cost.

The first is by the room. This is probably the most popular method of pricing used by carpet cleaners. It allows carpet cleaning services to give consumers a fairly accurate price over the phone without the need to do an onsite estimate. The price should include pre-treatment and normal spotting. The cleaner will usually limit the room size to somewhere between 200 and 300 square feet. Any larger than that and you may be charged for two rooms.

The next method is square foot pricing. This pricing method actually requires the carpet cleaner to do an onsite estimate. They might be able to give you a ballpark price over the phone, but they will need to come to your home and take your room measurements to give you an accurate price. Some cleaners will measure the whole room and others will measure just the open space around the furniture. Either way will probably come to the same price when they multiply it by their square foot rate. Once again, this price should include pre-treatment and ordinary spotting.

Those are the two methods of pricing that most companies use. While I can not give you an average cleaning price, because it does vary, I can tell you that you should be cautious of the lowest bidder. Remember, you get what you pay for. If a carpet cleaner is not making between $80 to $100 an hour they are losing money. If someone bids a job lower than that they are probably going to try to pull one of many carpet cleaning scams on you. So get a few different carpet cleaning quotes and choose wisely.

Dubai Airport Arrivals

Arrivals at Dubai Airport will either land and disembark at one of the air-conditioned walkway bridges leading directly into the terminal building or in an area some distance away from the terminal building where a bus will be provided to transport passengers to the arrivals terminal at Dubai Airport.

Passengers being transported by bus after landing will be directly transported to customs and passport control which is in a separate building from the main Terminal 1 building.

If you are required to collect an entry visa for Dubai, you should find that it will be waiting for you at the counter once you enter the passport control zone at Dubai Airport and before walking up the stairs to join the passport control queue.

The nationalities which are allowed visas on arrival to Dubai are the majority of European, North American, Australasian, and Asian passengers. As you might expect, delays can be experienced at passport control although these queues can be avoided by obtaining an e-gate card prior to travelling. The worst case scenario could mean waiting up to an hour in the normal passport control queues, however, this will of course depend on what day and at what time you arrive at the Airport.

Once you have cleared passport control you can proceed to the baggage reclaim area to collect your luggage and then head through the relevant zone at customs which will either be the green zone (nothing to declare) or the red zone if you do have something to declare. You will find that customs is generally the same as in any other international airport with customs officers picking the occasional random passenger to check.

Facilities for passengers arriving at Dubai Airport include a wide and varied selection of products at Dubai Duty Free which you will find just after the passport control security checkpoint.

On average you can get from the plane to the terminal exit in around 15-30 minutes, especially if you have a e-gate card and are only travelling with hand luggage. Evenings and early mornings tend to be the busiest times at Dubai Airport and there are many flights from Asia and Europe that operate through Dubai Airport in the middle of the night. There are no noise control restrictions in place so Dubai airport operates 24 hours a day.

Terminal 1 is where passengers for most non-Emirates Airline flights check in for departure, or clear customs and collect their bags on arrival. Arrivals and departures in Terminal 1 at Dubai Airport are now handled very efficiently since the installation of a further 10 electronic gates which has brought the total number of E-gates in Terminal 1 at Dubai International Airport to 16.

The electronic gates are a major convenience for passengers and reduce congestion at the manual immigration counters. They also take just 30 seconds to process each passenger and are much more reliable and advanced than the machines which were previously installed.

Due to the increasing popularity of the UAE-Gate card among passengers, it is likely that Dubai Airport will double the number of gates in the near future. There are approximately 450,000 UAE Gate card holders in Dubai, and an estimated 9,000 passengers use it daily at Dubai International Airport.

The author of this article is Enrique Rodriguez who specialises in writing airport guides including Dubai Airport which contains plenty of useful information on Dubai Airport Arrivals.
