Times have changed and so have all social paradigms. All these changes come with their own sets of problems. One of the gravest ones today is that of teen pregnancies in schools across the country. including the Orlando Florida schools.
A teen pregnancy, though the result of a few moments of careless indulgence, usually open up a Pandora 's Box. It is the start of a long series of events, crucial to both the young parents (if at all the father comes forward and owns up) and the newborn. Orlando schools recognize this, but what is it that they can do or should be doing to bring things under control?
Abstinence, Improved Sex Education or Birth Control - a rather difficult choice for Orlando schools
Dealing with teen pregnancies is certainly not easy for anyone concerned not just in Orlando schools. What's the way out? Should we look at treating the root cause or the effects?
There are a few options that schools in Orlando have. One is taking the conservative approach to solving the problem and espousing abstinence. However, in today's world where children are becoming both sexually active and experimental at as young as 10, this option doesn't stand even the remotest chance of being successful! No wonder, Orlando schools are being forced to seriously consider other options.
Though sex education is already a part of the curriculum across schools in Orlando starting from elementary through high school, it still is far from enough in dissuading teens from having (unsafe) sex and/or getting pregnant. The result is that Orlando schools continue to have to deal with young mothers and their problems.
Propagating birth control and safe sex, which is a very liberal approach seems to be the only way out. But doesn't that amount to allowing teens across Orlando schools to have sex in the first place? Why should the system itself provide for that opportunity for teens?
Their only business while at school is to focus on their studies, sports and other extra-curricular activities; there should be no place for sex - unless of course they wish to conveniently categorize it as an extra-curricular activity!
Maternity Leave for Pregnant Girls in Orlando Schools?
Another recent debate has been over whether teenaged pregnant girls in Orlando schools should qualify for maternity leave. It is a bit bizarre that such a thing as maternity leave for school children is even being considered! There has been the mention of even 'paternity leave' for the teenaged fathers from some quarters!
What else does this indicate other than encouragement for teens to get pregnant? On the contrary, some surveys have revealed that most teens across Orlando schools, who have already had a sexual encounter/experience, actually repented not having waited longer.
So, what remains to be seen is whether the conservative approach holds the key to the problem of teen pregnancies in Orlando schools.
