QuickBooks Class Tracking - How To Use For Best Results

What is Class Tracking?

Class Tracking in QuickBooks is a way to break down different segments of a single business. Let's say, for example, that you own a chain of restaurants. You have one in the north part of town, one on the south part of town, one in the east part of town, and one in the west part of town. You could establish classes with the following names: North, South, East, and West, and assign these to each transaction - writing checks, entering bills, generating invoices, etc.

If you want to see how of all the restaurants are doing as a group, you would run a regular Profit and Loss. But if you wanted to see how a particular restaurant was doing, you would still run a Profit and Loss, but you would filter it by Class. This report would give you the revenue and expenses for whichever class you chose, assuming all of the original entries were made correctly. Very nice!

What Types of Accounts Can Use Class Tracking?

Class Tracking is designed for Profit and Loss transactions, not for Balance Sheet transactions. On most screens it is very easy to tell if you are operating in a profit and loss transaction, or a balance sheet transaction with classes. Let's take the Write Checks screen. You are familiar with both halves of this screen, no doubt. There is the upper half with the green "check," and the lower half, with two tabs that say Expenses and Items in a white field.

If you have class tracking turned on in QuickBooks, open the Write Checks screen (from the banking menu, select Write Checks). Take a moment and look where the Class column is located. It's in the lower half of the screen. The upper half of this screen is definitely a balance sheet transaction - it takes money away from the bank account. The lower half of the screen is often a profit and loss transaction. And it is in this section where the class is assigned.

The same holds for the Enter Bills screen. Open it now and see (from the Vendors menu, select Enter Bills). In the Invoice screen, it is is a little more difficult to understand, but still, the class assigned here will affect a profit and loss account.

Can I Have Separate Companies in a Single QuickBooks File, and Assign Each Its Own Class?

No. Each unique entity, with a unique FEIN, must have it's own file.

I've often seen questions from people who have set up different companies in a single QuickBooks file, and assign a class name for to each company. At some point, the business owner inevitably wants a class report based on the balance sheet for each company - the bank accounts, accounts receivable, credit cards, accounts payable, etc., all broken down by class. QuickBooks Class Tracking cannot do this, and was not designed for this!

Another problem with establishing different companies within a single QuickBooks file is that ownership across the companies might not be the same. Retained Earnings for each company cannot be separated (at least, not automatically by QuickBooks). Maintaining separate Retained Earnings is crucial if the ownership across the entities varies AT ALL.

Also, if the entities are corporations, preparing the corporate tax returns becomes a real challenge if they've all been setup into a single QuickBooks file. There's just no way to have QuickBooks breakout the separate balance sheets that are required for the tax returns.

What Should I Do If I Have More Than One Company in a Single QuickBooks File?

You will need to separate them into separate QuickBooks files. I know, I know - you don't want separate QuickBooks files! I understand. But that is the way it needs to be - truly! If you need help doing it, go to the Intuit website and find a QuickBooks ProAdvisor to help. This is a sticky situation and should be handled by somebody who understands accounting principles.

The Very Best Luxury Hotels on East Coast USA From Maine to Key West

The east coast of the USA stretches for about 1800 miles from scenic Maine on the Canadian border to colorful Latino-influenced Miami, providing a host of experiences along the way. Whatever type of vacation you are looking for there are plenty of luxury hotels along this East Coast shoreline to provide it in style.

The northerly states of New England offer some of America's oldest history and the fall foliage colors are legendary. Boston has a compact historic center which can be explored by following the red line of bricks around the main sights. The Eliot Hotel, a Condé Nast Gold List contender and one of the classiest luxury hotels in Boston's elegant Back Bay district, makes a great base for discovering the city.

The Mid-Atlantic States of New Jersey and New York draw thousands of international visitors each year to see the sights of New York City. Luxury hotels in New York City can be found on every block and all are within easy walking distance of the Empire State Building, the shops of Fifth Avenue and the attractions in Central Park. The Pierre stands out above the rest - literally - as it looks down on Central Park and Museum Mile on Upper Eastside. Those wanting to cut costs but not standards should consider luxury hotels in New Jersey, just a short train ride from the Big Apple. The Robert Treat Hotel offers excellent luxury hotel accommodation in Newark's Arts District at very accommodating prices.

Further south on the US East Coast is the capital city, Washington DC with its government buildings and attractions including the White House, the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. The Four Seasons Hotel is at the posh end of town in Georgetown and is ideal for business and leisure guests in search of centrally located luxury hotels with good amenities in the capital.

The Carolinas, Georgia and Florida are known for their sunshine and mild winters. Popular with vacationers, winter snowbirds and retirees all year round, the sandy beaches and natural wildlife are a big attraction. Families flock to Orlando's theme parks before sinking down on the beaches around Canaveral or Tampa for a quiet reprieve in the sun and surf. For those staying in Orlando, the only place of note to stay is the Westin Grand Bohemian, one of the few luxury hotels in Orlando that treats guests as proper adults and dispenses service accordingly.

The last 100 miles or so are along the US1 Overseas Highway jumping from island to island via causeways and bridges to reach Key West, the end of the line. En route, Little Palm Island is a great resort to stay at, just 20 miles west of Marathon Key. From the private powder-soft sand beach of this luxury hotel in Florida's Keys you are as close to a Caribbean island as you can get, without setting sail.

What Are The Different Types Of House Foundation Types And When To Use Each?

The foundation is the first piece of a home to be constructed and creates a base for the rest of a home's components. There are three types of foundations that are commonly used in the U.S.: slab, crawlspace, and basement.

Slab Foundation

Slab is a type of foundation consisting of a structural concrete slab poured directly on the grade. No accessible space exists in slab construction. Slab foundations are popular in areas (i.e. the Southern United States) where there is a relatively high water table. (Water table refers to the depth in the soil at which you find water).

Crawlspace Foundation

A crawlspace is an accessible space with limited headroom, typically between the soil and the bottom of the first floor of a home. Crawlspace construction is predominant in areas where there is heavy clay content in the soil.

Basement Foundation

A basement is an accessible space between the soil and the bottom of the first floor of a home. It usually has more headroom than a crawlspace. Basement foundation construction is predominant in cold climates where the foundation needs to be situated below the frost level.

All three foundation types are usually constructed out of concrete, but can also use concrete masonry units or insulated concrete forms.

Concrete Masonry Units (CMUs) are hollow, concrete blocks. To create the foundation wall, mortar is used between blocks to hold them together, forming the wall.

Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs) are made of rigid foam insulation forms (a system of support assemblies, including mold, hardware, and necessary bracing to hold concrete) into which concrete is poured. Once the concrete has gained its full strength, the outside forms, the inside forms, or both are left in place to insulate the wall. ICFs are common in regions in which the local building code requires the foundation to be insulated. Another benefit is that the homeowner or builder is able to finish basement immediately, without adding studs.

Choosing the Type of Foundation:

Homeowners and builders make decisions about which type of foundation to use by gauging cost, needs/desires, and soil and weather conditions. If you have high water tables then it may not be possible to have a basement. If your land has shallow bedrock or boulders then it may be more costly to dig a basement. If you have a sloping lot it may be difficult to use a slab foundation. If you have a cold climate then you may need to dig down at least four or more feet to put the home's footings below frost level. If you have to go at least four feet deep then it may be worth spending some extra money to dig a few feet deeper and have a full basement. Also, it is easier to install and maintain mechanical systems in basements (compared to a crawlspace). Your builder can help you determine what type of foundation is best suited for your area.

The choice of foundation is also affected by personal preferences and costs. Basements can add thousands of dollars to the cost of a home compared to the cost of a crawlspace. However, when you consider the extra useable space created by a basement it is some of the cheapest square footage space of a home. If you are tight on funds and can't afford the basement then it may be a good idea to find a slightly smaller plan and use the savings to create a basement. You'll end up with a lot more storage space and potential living space by doing this.

Changing the Type of Foundation on your home:

Almost any house plan can have its foundation changed. It's common for people to design a different foundation if the available foundations do not suit their needs. If you are currently working with a builder you may want to ask them if they will take care of making the foundation changes for you. Sometimes with foundation design it may be helpful for somebody who is near you to do those changes because they will have more knowledge about your local soil conditions and the slope of your lot.

When changing foundation types, pay attention to where you will put the furnace, water heater, and stairs. If you need to add basement stairs, the basement stairs can usually be put under other stairways or you may be able to replace a closet or small room with basement stairs. Another common place to put basement stairs is to replace a mechanical room with stairs and move the mechanical items (such as the furnace and water heater) to the basement. Sometimes space near the laundry room, or space near the garage can be used for a basement stairs. Larger walk-in closets are sometimes reduced in size to allow space for basement stairs. You can often add a basement stairs to a plan without increasing the size of the plan. However, sometimes space may need to be added to a plan to provide room for a basement stairs.

It should be noted that it is the owner's full responsibility to check with his/her local and state building authorities, his/her builder, and the designer of the house plan to ensure that the home meets all applicable building codes and requirements.

8 Most Common Interview Questions - With 8 Best Answers

When preparing for your next job interview, you'll want to have top-notch answers to the 8 most common interview questions. These answers provide a guideline to follow, and the most important thing to do is be yourself when answering these common interview questions. The sincerity that will come through will do more to impress the interviewer than anything you have to say.

Given that, here are the 8 most common interview questions:

1. Tell me about yourself.

Perhaps this the most famous and common interview question of all interview questions. "Tell me about yourself" is the gateway to just about anything you wish to say. When asked the question, the interviewer doesn't want to know where you were born or what color your hair is. This question prompts you to show the interviewer why you are qualified for this job. Your answer may reveal some of your greatest achievements or how your past experience might relate to the job you are applying for.

2. Why would I hire you?

For this common interview question, you need to realize that the better answer you give, the easier it is for the employer -- It's up to you to give the employer a reason to hire you. This is a great time to tell the interviewer about any past work experience that is relevant to the job you are applying for. You might say, "When I was working at my previous job, I did (fill in with specific duty or responsibility). I feel that this experience will allow me to excel at this position I am applying for." This helps the interviewer picture you in the position, and is a great answer to this common interview question.

3. What are you strengths?

The first thing you should do is figure out 2-3 things about yourself that you really like about yourself and elaborate. This should put you in good shape to answer this commonly asked interview question. Always support your strength with a real-life example. For example, you may say you are dedicated. You should back this up with the time at your last job where you had an important project due and worked extra hours to make sure it got done, for instance. Now the interviewer has better insight into your work ethic and how you conduct yourself in pressure situations.

4. What are your weaknesses?

When answering this common interview question, you always want to give an answer that isn't really a weakness. You may say, "I don't speak a second language," or "when I start a project, I can't focus on anything else until I get it done." This shows that you are dedicated and hard working. You never want to truly bash yourself when answering this common interview question. That isn't the point. Making a positive seem negative is the trick.

5. What is the most important thing to you in a job?

If there is something really important for you to have in a job, be honest and say it. Remember, a job interview is a tool to reveal the best fit for the company. If something is really important to you that the company doesn't offer, it is best to reveal it now. Out of all the common interview questions, this is the one where you really need to follow your instincts.

6. What are you career goals?

Employers ask this interview question because they want to see what positions you might grow into if you were hired. The company may be looking for a candidate they can groom into their next Senior VP. However, if you are only looking for a job to cover you for the next couple of years, it might not be the best match.

7. Do you have any questions for me?

Do your research ahead of time and if you truly have a question, ask it. When you ask legitimate, relevant questions, you show the interviewer you put in time to research beforehand. However, don't ever ask questions just to ask questions or to look good. The interviewer will sense your lack of authenticity right away and that may hurt your chances. Make the time to think of an intelligent question about the job before hand. You may ask, "what is a typical day like for this position?" You can also ask, "What opportunity for advancement does this position have?"

8. Why did you leave your last job?

Whatever the reason was, tell the story of why is was mutually beneficial for you to leave the company. Never blurt out, "I got fired," and end it at that. It makes you look bad and can even make the interviewer feel uncomfortable. Prepare an honest story with a logical reason that doesn't reveal too much personal information or company gossip. If you did get fired, you can use this as an opportunity to discuss what you lessons you learned and what you would now do differently.

Now you have top-notch answers to the 8 most common interview questions. Keep practicing your answers and nail your next interview!

Top Ten Ways To Have An Affair And Not Get Caught...

Most everyone believes when they get married that it will be forever. However, the reality in today's world is that many marriages fail and result in divorce. Other married couples may fall out of love and grow to dislike one another more than they care to admit. But for a variety of reasons (kids, money, religious beliefs etc...), they remain husband and wife in theory primarily.

These types of marriages can inevitably lead one or both spouses to seek the comfort of another adult and eventually cheat on one another. Another scenario that may lead a married person to be unfaithful is an unexpected meeting with someone who sweeps them off their feet.

Despite their attempts to prevent this relationship from becoming an extramarital affair, they may find their feelings to powerful to deny and thus give into their desires to be with this new person. The saying "Life is too short..." comes to mind as justification for this new love or lust.

Yet other married people may consciously choose to cheat on their spouses. If you fall into that category, you probably have the art of not getting caught mastered already.

Regardless of what leads a spouse to break their wedding vows, here some of the best ways to get away with an affair.

  1. Never bring your lover to your home.

  2. Never go to your lover's home (unless they are completely single and free from the ties of marriage and/or a serious relationship.) If they get caught by their significant other, chances are your spouse will also find out.

  3. Never call your new companion from your home phone and/or your cell phone (if your spouse has access to your phone record.)

  4. Never give your new friend your home phone number.

  5. Keep a low profile when you are out with your lover. You would be surprised how many people know you and/or your spouse, who unbeknownst to you may see you lavishing inappropriate attention on your new companion in public.

  6. Do your best to meet with your lover out of town - somewhere far enough away from home that you do not know people and people do not know you.

  7. Try to set up a regular schedule of "dates" with your lover. If your spouse expects you to be out of town for business overnight every Wednesday, he/she will not suspect anything when you maintain this schedule and include your new friend in your overnight stays.

  8. Do not become too confident in your ability to deceive your spouse. If you become too sure of yourself, you will get sloppy and you may get caught.

  9. Do not tell everyone you know about your illicit trysts. You should trust very few, if any, friends with your secret.

  10. Do not make promises you cannot keep. Nothing will prompt your lover to reveal your affair to your spouse quicker than your failure to fulfill some insincere commitment to end your marriage for him or her.

Some Of The Best Reasons For Traveling Alone

Have you ever noticed that most people travel in with other people? Perhaps you yourself wouldn't consider traveling alone, choosing to travel only if accompanied by another person. This is due in part to people being afraid that they will be bored if they travel alone, when in fact the reverse may be true.

There are a lot of benefits to traveling alone. One good reason is that your schedule is your own. When you travel with other people, their interests may differ from yours. This causes you to have to try to fit everyone else's activities and sight seeing preferences in with your own. This could cause you to miss out on things that you really wanted to see and do. Who knows when you will have the chance to go on vacation again, so you should be able to see and do whatever you want. Since you don't have anyone traveling with you, you can do just that.

One of the fun things about traveling is not only getting to see new places, but also making new friends. When you travel with other people, you tend to stay within that group and you don't get to meet the other interesting folk that are around you. When you travel alone, you have the opportunity to get to know people that you probably wouldn't have gotten a chance to if you were traveling with others. This can be really nice if you're single and hoping to meet someone special.

If you're worried about taking a cruise or vacation and being surrounded by couples or groups of people, take heart. There are many vacations that are designed with singles in mind. You can take a cruise or go to an exotic destination where other single people just like you will surround you. This can open up a whole new world of acquaintances and you won't feel so alone on your trip.

Having the opportunity to try different activities while on vacation is another great reason to travel alone. Perhaps you've always wanted to climb a mountain but your traveling companion was afraid of heights. Or, maybe you wanted to go white water rafting but someone in the group was afraid of water. By traveling alone, you can explore your adventurous spirit. By the same token, you may just want to get away for peace and relaxation and choose to spend your time lying around the beach or the pool. Your traveling companions may want to go sightseeing and do other things that you are not in the mood for.

The important thing to remember when traveling alone is to stay safe. Keep all of your documents in a safe place, as well as any jewelry or personal items. If you stay in a hotel, use the safe that they often provide guests. The next time you plan a vacation, consider going it alone. You may be surprised at the great time you have.

Barbados - The Six Best Beaches in Barbados

By law, all beaches in Barbados are open to the public from the high-water mark down to the sea. Not a one is off-limits to anyone. This is great if you like to star gaze; Barbados beaches are a favorite getaway for celebrities the world over. Celebrity or not, everyone who visits marvels at Barbados' pink-white beaches, which are made of coral reefs that have been ground into a very fine powder by the waves of the ocean.

"Favorite beaches" are not automatically those graced by the placid waters of the Caribbean Sea. It's true that many of us like the "zen" of the calm. But some of us crave the exciting rough and tumble of the Atlantic Ocean.

In its 70 miles of beaches, Barbados offers both. The water lapping the beaches of the west coast, aka our "Platinum Coast," is the Caribbean Sea, which is as calm as a lake. The Atlantic Ocean on the east coast serves up world-class surfers' waves; it's fun to sit on the beach at the "Soup Bowl" in Bathsheba on the east coast and watch surfers risk life and limb for a ride on the perfect wave.

The south coast offers a mixture of Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean waters - these waters are not calm but not tumultuous, either. The lively water and sugar-white sands make the south coast beaches a favorite for many of our visitors.

Any "best" list is a personal effort, and listing Barbados's best beaches is necessarily even more personal. There are so many to like, there could be any combination in any list. But here's a stab anyway.

1. Carlisle Bay. We start near the city, on a mile-long stretch of beach running the length of historic Carlisle Bay, from the Hilton at one end (called Needham's Point) to Bridgetown at the other. Actually, this beach is further divided into local sections like Yacht Club Beach, Burke's Beach, Browne's Beach and so on, but it's one dazzling expanse, beloved by many Barbadians.

2. Brandon's Beach. On the north side of the city, along the beginnings of the West Coast. Another long stretch of amazing white sand, nestled by calm, warm waters. Brandon's beach becomes Brighton Beach and then turns back into Brandon's again. But whatever you call it, it's a beauty.

3. Sandy Lane Beach. The centre of West Coast opulence. This a good place to hang out and watch the stars from the world-famous Sandy Lane Hotel come to luxuriate in the warm Caribbean Sea. Madonna, Pavarotti, Jagger, Cowell, Tiger Woods (who honeymooned there) - they've all been there, and they all come back. And no wonder - the beach is a pristine white, with water so clear you can see your toes wiggle.

4. Cattlewash Beach. Running for several miles along Barbados' rough east coast, Cattlewash beach absorbs the power of the Atlantic waves' first landfall after a journey of 3,000 miles. As a result, the surf is magnificent, pounding in day and night. The places to swim are little pools and secluded areas - other spots can be dangerous. Interestingly, the east coast beach is rough, coarse, brown sand.

5. Crane Beach. A marvelous sight from the towering perspective of the Crane Hotel, and a delight to swim at or stroll along. This is the south-east of the island, but the waves are broken by a long barrier reef, so the sea is safe and shallow. Accessible through the hotel property or via public road.

6. Accra Beach. Right in the action area of the South Coast. You'll often spy the super-star singer Rhianna here. She's a Barbados native and comes home often. And why wouldn't she choose Accra Beach? Accra is a half-mile of blazing white beach, with great body-surfing and swimming areas along it.

By now, for anyone who knows Barbados, my list is bound to have its supporters and its detractors. Truth is, there's probably not a bad beach anywhere on the island. So go ahead - explore them all, and make your own list of favorites!
