Parking at Chicago's O'Hare Airport can be a hassle to say the least. What I have learned from many past experiences is leave the driving into the airport for someone else. Since I don't live close to the airport, I have learned to use what is known as the park and fly hotel.

The park and fly hotel usually offers parking up to 15 days and a free shuttle ride to and from the airport, not to mention a 1 night stay at the hotel with all the amenities included. With that in mind we will list the top 3 hotels near Chicago O'Hare Airport offering park and fly packages, with the lowest priced deals first for those on a budget. These deals often cost less than the price of airport parking alone.

   The Ramada O'Hare Airport is about 6 miles from O'Hare and offers a great park stay fly package starting at just $89 for up to 4 people and 14 days parking. This has to be one of the best deals in the country. Costing far less than parking at O'Hare and you get to stay at the hotel for 1 night before or after your trip. Definitely a good deal for the money, even if you don't stay the night.

   The LaQuinta Inn and Suites Near O'Hare Airport had the next best deal at only $95 for 2 people and up to 14 days parking. They have their airport shuttles running every hour on the hour and are located just 7 miles from the airport. Not being right next to the airport can be a blessing if you're a light sleeper, no noisy airplanes flying over all night. Conveniently located in Elk Grove Village just north of O'Hare, this is a nice hotel and you will get a good nights rest knowing how much you are saving over airport parking alone.

   Radisson Hotel at O'Hare Airport is for those who want to be closer to the airport. Located just 2 miles from O'Hare, this park and fly package deal will only set you back about $119 for 7 days parking, with free shuttles running every 30 minutes, 24 hours a day. This is a top notch hotel for the price, and close to the airport. Other hotels this close to the airport will cost almost twice as much as this deal.

So as you can see, staying at one of these park and fly hotels is completely within your reach, especially if you have to park at O'Hare anyway. Often costing less than airport parking alone, these could fit right into your travel budget, and maybe even save you some time and money in the long run.

Mystery Hotels - How to Cheat and Maybe Get a Bargain

We have spent some time looking at lastminute.com's 'Mystery Hotel' range and the new mystery offers from wotif.com. In some cases, LastMinute's descriptions of its mystery hotels make it pretty easy to pinpoint the actual hotel. Wotif's mystery hotels are a little harder to fathom but there are some clues, for instance they might be selling 'Comfort' and 'Grand Comfort' rooms at a mystery hotel so you just go through the list of other Wotif hotels in the same city and see which hotel uses that description for its rooms. The US company Priceline was the originator of the mystery hotel deal and we have always had serious misgivings about using them.

The main objection is that instead of seeing a discounted price (20% off the usual agent's price is fairly normal for both LastMinute and Wotif) at a specific hotel, Priceline gives you no clue as to the actual hotel and you have to bid the price you are prepared to pay. Priceline does give a little help - it breaks cities down into areas and shows the normal retail price of hotels in different star categories and suggests a likely discount you should apply when bidding. Nonetheless, there is a huge danger that you will end up paying more than you need to. Priceline might have set a secret minimum bid of $80 a night but if someone bids $95 the company will happily accept the bid. Also, in recent years, business has been very good for the hotel industry and we suspect that Priceline was selling rooms at some hotels that would otherwise have difficulty in attracting guests. In other words, you could end up paying over the odds for an inferior hotel.

However, now the game has changed a little. Quite a few hotels have empty rooms and are willing to sell them at low rates through Priceline, on condition of anonymity to avoid destroying their normal rating. And, we have found a rather handy guide that should help you avoid some of the Priceline pitfalls.

One community forum for users of Priceline (and HotWire, a division of Expedia, which is designed more for US customers) is http://www.betterbidding.com. The front page is a bit messy, but all you need do is scroll down to find the forum dedicated to the area you want to visit. Pick Boston and the first post will be a list of hotels that forum members have purchased through Priceline. There is no guarantee that this list is completely accurate - hotels will come and go, depending on season and occupancy - but at least you have an idea of the sort of hotel you will get in each star category. Then you go through the most recent posts where members have listed deals they have actually obtained from Priceline. You may see that someone was able to bid $80 for a room at the Omni Parker two days ago and a bid of $85 got a room at the Hyatt Regency a week earlier. You need to take careful note of when the reservations were for (weekdays or weekends) and how far in advance the reservations were made because this is bound to have an effect on the price.

This site works best with Priceline's US hotels. Postings for international reservations are far sparser. If you want to stay in Venice in May, it is of little use to know that someone was able to bid $90 for a room at the Hilton Molino in February.

All prices on Priceline are before the dreaded 'taxes and charges', which can add a sizeable sum to the total and clearly include a generous service charge. We could not see how they came up with charges of £28 on a basic hotel cost of £92. At least you see this figure before your bid is submitted.

Once you are ready to go ahead, you have to submit your payment details. If the bid is accepted, your money is taken immediately and there is no possibility of cancellation or alteration. If the bid is not accepted, no money is taken and you are only allowed to rebid if you alter some of the terms of the original bid. Betterbidding suggests a way around this. Let's say you want to stay in a five-star hotel in one area of Paris. Your initial bid is turned down so you alter your bid to include another area of Paris but an area which you can see from Betterbidding does not have a Priceline five-star hotel. Assuming Priceline has not suddenly added a new hotel (which is a very real possibility) then your increased bid on the hotel you want should be accepted.

Betterbidding also gives the same range of information for HotWire. This is part of the same group that owns Expedia and Hotels.com but it is designed principally for US customers and payment is taken in dollars - effectively adding to the cost for UK customers.

HotWire's system is similar to Priceline with the bidding aspect removed. You know the star rating in advance, the area of the city involved and the full cost (plus taxes and charges). A quick look at Betterbidding should give you an idea of which hotels it is selling in the various categories and cities. The site is not as strong on hotels outside North America as Priceline.

With both these sites, we recommend you attempt to cross-check prices with the hotels direct or hotels of a similar category. Neither Booking.com, nor Expedia/Hotels.com (the companies behind these mystery sites) is noted for selling hotels cheaply. In some cases, a 20% discount off their rates will only equate to a 10% discount off rates available elsewhere. If you think you can get a room at the Luxor in Las Vegas for $65, you might find it better to take away the guesswork and book direct with the hotel for $72.

We certainly cannot recommend Priceline and the Betterbidding site to everyone. It can be very time-consuming and dangerous. There is a huge potential for error: you can easily pay quite a lot of money for a hotel you do not want. Another significant danger is that you can get carried away with the whole game and concentrate too much on trying to 'win' rather than on finding a hotel that is suitable for you! However, there are some genuine bargains around, particularly in the US, where Priceline is stronger, and there is plenty of information on Betterbidding. If you are looking for a couple of nights in a hotel in New York, and you have the time and patience, you might just get a good deal.

Will I get the worst room in the hotel if I have booked a mystery deal at a special price?

There is a possibility that a few hotels will use these mystery deals to sell a handful of less desirable rooms they would not normally sell unless the hotel was full. Most hotels will give you a standard room but, as is common for rooms booked at special rates through agents, it is likely to be the lowest-category room available. The better rooms may be on higher floors, have more modern furnishings or better views and these are likely to be allocated to clients who have booked direct with the hotel.

But...

If you have booked a standard room through an agent (whether it be Priceline or not), there is no reason why you cannot upgrade the room when you arrive. Many hotels are more than happy to upgrade agency customers to executive-floor rooms (maybe for an extra £30 a night) or give them a larger room or one with a better view. Hotels are looking for extra revenue at every opportunity and if someone offers them money, and they have a better room available, they are unlikely to turn them down. Interestingly, this method can quite often lead to a free upgrade! A receptionist may find the task of taking the extra payment on the computer system too daunting and just allocate a better room without charge. Offering to pay for an upgrade can be a better way of getting a free upgrade than just asking.

Different Types of Hotels

When you go to stay in a hotel there are several different considerations. One of them, of course, is price. It's not a concern for everyone, but most people are budget-conscious and can't just spend whatever they want to on accommodations. With that being the case, you'll have to determine what fits within your budget and what you can expect from a hotel in that price range. Where budget accommodations are concerned you won't pay a lot but you won't get a lot, either. Most of these hotels are older, and although they are clean there are anything but fancy. The linens and fixtures might be a bit worn and they won't have the look and feel of the higher priced hotels. You don't usually get any 'freebies,' either, although you might be treated to a simple breakfast and/or a newspaper included in the price.
 
Luxury hotels are a far different story from budget hotels. They cost much more, but you also get many more amenities than you would in a place where you pay considerably less. You can expect food, newspapers, free phone calls, better television channel selections, and more pampering. These hotels often have pools, spas, free room service, massages, robes and slippers, and other amenities that you wouldn't otherwise get. You are generally given whatever you ask for, within reason, and the people there carry your bags and do everything that they can to ensure that you are happy. It's very important to them that you have a good stay and that you return in the future.
 
A lot of people stay in middle-of-the-road hotels. These places offer much more than the budget hotels, but they don't come close to what the luxury hotels provide. You'll get some freebies there, but you won't get the pampering and the do-anything-for-you attitude that you'll get in the luxury hotels. That doesn't seem to be required, though, because these standard hotels are still very popular. It gives people the feeling that they are staying in a nice hotel without requiring them to spend such an excessive amount of money. The fixtures in these hotels will be newer than the budget hotels, as will the linens. They will be nice places overall, but they won't have the spas and free massages and other treatments that a lot of the luxury options provide. For travellers on a tight budget, these hotels might be too costly, as well.

Hong Kong Hotels - Where to Stay in Kowloon

Hong Kong hotels are some of the most expensive accommodations in Asia. But that doesn't mean you won't find any budget or affordable hotels at all. For the most hotel choices for a traveler on a budget or just anyone looking for a decent place to stay without breaking the bank, head for the Kowloon peninsula in Hong Kong.

The Kowloon peninsula is Hong Kong island's gateway to mainland China. There is an efficient and affordable train system running up and down Kowloon with stations positioned throughout the popular districts in the area. You can easily travel back and forth to each other by Hong Kong's classic and iconic ferry boats across the Hong Kong Harbour or by train through a tunnel beneath the harbour.

A room at BP will set you back around HK$650 (low season room rate). The room rate does not include breakfast though, however there are many affordable places to eat nearby, even a McDonald's restaurant.

Another budget hotel worth looking at is located a bit further up in Mongkok district. It's called the Largos Hotel. Just like the BP the rooms are small but comfortable and good for a night's rest. Rooms here cost around HK$600 (low season rate) and is a good option close to the Mongkok train station and the ever popular street markets stalls open every night nearby.

Now if room space is a big concern and you have a serious case of claustrophobia yet can afford to spend just a bit more then the Prudential Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui district should be your first choice. The Prudential is one of those rare hotels with big rooms and bathrooms. A superior room can fit two twin beds, a large desk and a lounge couch. All for HK$900 per night. And it's also in a convenient location with a train station entrance below the hotel with plenty of places to eat and shop within walking distance.

Even though hotels in Hong Kong are considered expensive they are still booked full most of the time, especially during the low season. And it's a good idea to not visit during October (the conventions in town) and February (Chinese New Year's). Room rates during those time can double and even triple in price.

Bed Bugs in Hotels - A Traveller's Guide

Anyone who travels regularly be it for business or pleasure should be aware of one very important fact - there can be bed bugs in hotels!

Bed bugs have become an ever growing problem across the USA and it is not just households who are experiencing problems with these pests which were thought to have been eradicated years ago. There are bugs in our hotels too. It is not just the cheap and nasty motels and hotels who have the problem either. Some of the most expensive, luxury hotels have been blighted with bed bugs too.

So why have they re-appeared? Quite simply the pesticides which once eradicated many of our bugs including bed bugs - one of which was DDT were found to be harmful both to human health and to the environment and so were withdrawn from use. The pesticides which replaced them are designed to target one particular type of bug say for example cockroaches and because bed bugs have not been treated they have now become a big problem.

would you recognise a bed bug? Well, they are oval in shape and measure about 1/4 of an inch in length when mature. The are a reddish brown in colour and there main source of nourishment is blood - human blood! They will however bite pets such as dogs as well.

Where are they found? They tend to hide out in carpets, mattresses, bed frames, behind peeling wall coverings, cracks, crevices and some times can be found in the most obscure places such as light switches or smoke detectors. These little bleeders are nocturnal so you are very unlikely to come across them during daylight hours. However, if there are bed bugs in your hotel room they will most definitely come out for a feast whilst you sleep!

Where do the bed bugs in hotels come from? They are very good at hitching lifts in luggage, clothing and any other items where they can hide out. So anyone travelling regularly can quite easily transport the blood sucking pests from hotel to hotel or indeed take them home. Where a new batch will hatch and the cycle continue.

How can you avoid bed bugs in hotels? The best thing to do is immediately you arrive and BEFORE you open your luggage have a thorough look around the room. Check the mattress along seams and around any handles or buttons for live bugs, dark stains which could be fecal marks or blood smears where bed bugs have been squashed by previous occupants. Also check furniture - closets, drawers and so on. Have a look around the walls check any cracks or peeling wall paper or paint for signs of bugs. Again you may not actually see any live bugs but there will be evidence of activity from any fecal makes left round the entrance to their hiding place.

If you have any concerns that there may be bugs in your hotel DO NOT UNPACK your luggage. The simplest way to avoid stowaways in your belongings is to keep everything in your suite case, keep it on a raised surface, off the floor and keep it zipped shut. Don't forget to do the same with laptop cases and hand luggage.

What do you do if you are bitten by bed bugs in a hotel? Firstly inform the management! Secondly go to a drug store and purchase some cream such as hydrocortisone or an oral antihistamine which will ease the itching of the bites. These bites for the majority of people are red and itchy. They may look like a rash or come up as red bumps or welts. Apart from the discomfort of the itching there is not usually any ill effects. Scratching, can cause the bites to become infected in which case a doctor may have to be consulted.

What do you do next? Firstly do not unpack your luggage in your home or any other hotel room. Before leaving the hotel where the infestation is, if possible place all clothing, shoes and other personal belongings which may be infected in plastic bags and seal them tight. You should discard any items which you no longer require such as newspapers, magazines and so on as these too may be infected with larvae or nymphs. Thoroughly check suite cases and any other baggage for unwanted guests. It may be an idea to spray them with a non toxic bed bug spray such as Bed Bug Patrol which will also leave behind a pleasant fragrance. Launder all clothing on a hot wash cycle, any items which cannot be washed should be placed in a tumble dryer on a hot setting for around 10 minutes. This will not only kill adult bugs but also eggs and nymphs as well. For other clothing such as expensive business suites which would not stand laundering or tumble drying you could try using a steam cleaning machine which will also kill the bugs at their various stages of development.

It is vital that once you have dealt with clothing etc. that you thoroughly clean all work tops and flooring with disinfectant to prevent any spread of the bed bugs.

The Venetian is one of the newest hotels on the Las Vegas strip and is designed to look like the city of Venice.
