Take a walk in the old city of Orlando

There is plenty to do in Orlando, but just go to famous theme parks, why not try something different on your next Orlando vacation. A walk in the historic center of downtown brings you face to face with the history of major face of this city. Your walk can be concentrated in the historic district of eight blocks as a building that was designated in 1980 by the City of Orlando. The district is a coherent collection ofThe buildings reflect the history of commercial and governmental Orlando.

The district is composed of buildings constructed in 1880 to early 1940. Surrounded by modern skyscrapers, some 60 historic buildings in this neighborhood provides a glimpse into the past of the city. The designation of the historic center has helped preserve the buildings that would otherwise have been demolished due to the rapid growth and demand for commercial space in this boomingCity.

historic district of Orlando is the beginning of political and economic development of the city for over six decades. The district includes historic buildings such as guardian, court buildings, banks, office buildings and commercial property. The variety of styles and sizes, reflecting the development of architecture and construction in the city center.

The styles are represented in the neighborhood of Queen Anne, Twentieth Century Commercial Style, Beaux-Arts, Mediterranean Revival, ArtDeco and modern art. Almost all the buildings are brick through a series of fires in 1800 that destroyed many wooden structures and prompted the city to move to new building standards.

1. Well'sbuilt Hotel, 511 South Street West

Dr. William Monroe Wells built the hotel in 1926. Provided food for African-Americans during segregation, when the rooms were not available to them inin other areas. Many famous artists and athletes stayed here. Next, Dr. Wells' South Street Casino, where many of the entertainers performed for the African-American community. 2. Dr. William Monroe Wells House, 519 South Street West

Dr. William Monroe Wells built this Foursquare style house on a plot of land one block east in 1924. He was known s one of the longest practice of Orlando asAfrican American physicians and Casino has been involved in commercial and cultural life of the community with Well'sbuilt Hotel and South Street.

3. Victorian House & Cottage, 541 South Street West

The Victorian House and Cottage are among the only remaining Folk Victorian structures left in the city. The level of detail of the original turned columns, railings and gratings is not carved in the other buildings in Orlando

4. Hankins Building,647 West Street South

Dr. IS Hankins built this Art Deco commercial building in 1947. Hank was one of the first African-American physician and civic leader. He was an active participant in the Washington Shores development, which "have provided new opportunities for home ownership for African-American Orlando.

5. Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, 701 South Street West

The African American Church was organized in 1919 and met in different places, was to finally landpurchased. Church members made the rusticated concrete blocks that were used for the construction of the walls. The Gothic church was opened 1921st

6. Ebenezer Methodist Church, 596 Church Street West

In 1892 this church was a wooden church on this site. It was the first African-American Methodist Church in Orlando. Starting in 1922 the members built in Gothic style brick church.

7. Slemons Department Store, 129 West Church Street

This drygoods store was built in 1924 for William Slemons. It 's the first time in Orlando in 1886. Slemons and his sons owned a number of shops in downtown Orlando from 1880 until well into the mid-twentieth century.
